Ground Control

Ground Control and n8n

Ground Control vs n8n: Mission Ownership Beyond Workflow Automation

Choose Ground Control when your agents own outcomes that span workflows, revisions and reviews. Its work graph connects the initiative to execution and acceptance, so the fleet can carry the same work forward across runs. n8n composes workflows and agents; Ground Control gives sustained agent work a shared control plane.

The cost of the alternative

What you give up with n8n

n8n gives you workflows and agents. A mission that spans several automations still needs an owner, a plan and a definition of completion. Choosing automation as the foundation leaves that work-management layer for your team to construct.

  • A work contract above the workflow: scope and acceptance criteria persist across changes to the automation, repeated runs and independent reviews.
  • Coordination across automations: initiatives, work packages and dependencies tell the fleet what is owed, who owns it and which work must happen first.
  • Agent-operated delivery: discovery, work authoring, workflow revisions, policy handoffs and acceptance form one lifecycle, beyond creating and running individual automations.

The product models

How n8n organizes agent work

Primary work abstraction
Visual workflows and reusable agents with tools, triggers, sessions and memory.
Orchestration layer
Workflows can lead with agent steps; agents can lead with workflows as tools.
Agent participation
MCP supports external AI clients building, editing and testing workflows, plus connected tools.
Governance and continuity
Workflow/agent controls, approval steps, scoped credentials, execution history and versioning.

Agent-led and workflow-led automation

n8n is a workflow automation platform with a substantial agent layer. Its product describes both workflows that contain agent steps and agents that use workflows as tools. Reusable agents add their own tools, triggers, sessions and memory. Its cloud and self-hosted options make deployment ownership part of the selection decision.

Ground Control’s typed workflow model is embedded in a broader governed work lifecycle. The work package specifies the obligation; a workflow revision defines execution structure; selected bindings and runtime attempts describe how execution proceeds. The work model can consequently remain meaningful across several implementations, runs and reviews.

For sustained agent work, that relationship is valuable operational context. A new worker can inspect the requested outcome, governing workflow revision and evidence from prior attempts. A change to the automation can be evaluated against the same acceptance criteria.[1][2][4]

MCP access is the beginning of the comparison

n8n’s instance-level MCP offering lets external AI clients build, edit and test workflows. It also supports MCP server exposure and MCP clients that consume external tools.

Ground Control exposes an agent-operable work lifecycle. Schema-guided discovery supports authoring; work objects express scope and acceptance criteria; tenant policy mediates actions; revision and attempt identities support continuation. Agents can coordinate the requested outcome through planning, execution and review, with explicit state at each handoff.

Choose this model when your agent’s responsibility extends across several automations. The shared work graph gives it a stable reference for what to accomplish, what it may do next and how completion will be judged.[3][1]

A practical selection check

Questions an agent can answer before it commits

  • Is the agent optimizing a reusable automation, or coordinating an outcome that spans multiple automations and reviews?
  • Should workflow execution history be the primary operational record, or should runs attach to a separately versioned work contract?
  • How much deployment control and connector-level composition does the organization want to own?

Make the work portable across your fleet

Why choose Ground Control

Choose Ground Control to give your agents ownership of the work lifecycle: specification, workflow revisions, execution, policy handoffs and acceptance. Keep those responsibilities connected as the work crosses automations and agent sessions.
